North Dakota Fire Department Extinguishes Combine Fire with SoyFoamTM TF-1122

The Casselton North Dakota Fire Department successfully used SoyFoamTM TF-1122 to extinguish a challenging combine fire during soybean harvest. Casselton’s Fire Chief John Hejl reports that the incident began when the operator noticed smoke coming from the combine. Attempts to extinguish the fire with water were unsuccessful, and while driving the machine toward a nearby farmyard, the diesel tank ruptured. The fire quickly spread, fully engulfing the combine and igniting nearby grass in the dry, burn-restricted conditions of Cass County.

When the Casselton Fire Department arrived, the combine was completely engulfed, fueled by approximately 150 gallons of diesel, 30-40 gallons of hydraulic and engine oil, and various plastic components. The fire presented significant challenges due to its intensity and the risk of spreading. The crew deployed Engine 2 with a 13⁄4-inch pre-connected hose line equipped with a combination nozzle, applying SoyFoamTM TF-1122 directly from the truck’s foam cell using an integrated injection system. No specialized equipment or changes to existing systems were needed, showcasing the foam’s seamless compatibility with standard firefighting tools.

SoyFoamTM TF-1122 performed exceptionally in suppressing the fire. Despite the presence of multiple flammable materials, the foam worked quickly to contain and extinguish the flames. Approximately 3,750 gallons of water educted with SoyFoamTM TF-1122 were used to eradicate the fire and elimate the threat. Even a rookie firefighter was able to handle the hose and effectively apply the foam, demonstrating its ease of use in real-world situations.

The use of SoyFoamTM TF-1122 not only provided superior firefighting performance but also ensured added safety for firefighters and the environment. Unlike traditional foams, SoyFoamTM TF-1122 contains no PFAS or fluorines, eliminating concerns about harmful runoff or long-term health risks for firefighters. Its environmentally friendly formulation was especially important in this case, where runoff could have affected nearby areas.

The Casselton Fire Department’s success with SoyFoamTM TF-1122 highlights its effectiveness as a reliable and sustainable firefighting solution. The department’s ability to handle this high-intensity fire with ease underscores SoyFoamTM’s value in protecting both first responders and the environment, offering a safer alternative without compromising performance.

Cross Plains Solutions has partnered with the United Soybean Board for the research and promotion of SoyFoamTM TF-1122, which is currently made from soy flour. The North Dakota Soybean Council and other state soybean boards are supporting the introduction of SoyFoamTM TF-1122 to fire departments in their states where it protects firefighters and their communities, as well as creates new economic opportunities for soybean growers through a new U.S. soy.
