South Dakota’s Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR), in partnership with the South Dakota Soybean Checkoff, has launched a statewide initiative to collect and destroy PFAS-based firefighting foams while offering firefighters a safer soybased alternative. PFAS “forever chemicals” pose environmental and health risks, and this program helps prevent them from contaminating soil and water. Fire departments that turn in their PFAS foam will receive SoyFoam, a soybean-based product developed through checkoff-funded research. Collections will take place in the coming weeks, with DANR overseeing the safe transport and disposal of all PFAS materials.
