Kentucky Civil Defense Fire & Rescue Protects with Soy-biobased Bar & Chain Biodegradable Oil & Firefighting Foam

February 2025 winter storms sent the Corydon, Kentucky Civil Defense Fire & Rescue into action with 32 consecutive hours of clearing fallen trees and limbs from roads. Like many emergency response crews across the country, every Corydon truck is equipped with at least one chainsaw to tackle such jobs. Performance is critical even under extreme cold or heat.

Corydon, Kentucky Civil Defense Fire & Rescue is protecting the planet as well as people with soy-biobased products. The soy-biobased bar-and-chain oil is another opportunity to prevent petroleum from coming into contact with soil or groundwater.

A soy-based bar and chain oil is meeting the challenge. In 2024, the Kentucky crew switched to DEWALT®’s soy-biobased bar & chain biodegradable oil. “It works as well or better than any bar-and-chain oil I have ever used,” says Assistant Fire Chief Jeff King, who started working with chainsaws at age 13.

The Corydon fire and rescue is protecting the planet as well as people with soybiobased products. “A small amount of oil flings off every time anyone runs a chainsaw,” says King. “This soy-biobased bar-and-chain oil is another opportunity to prevent petroleum from coming into contact with soil or groundwater.”

King learned about the product when he joined the Kentucky Soybean Board for a visit to see their partnership with Airable Research Lab (a business line of the Ohio Soybean Council). U.S. soybean farmers, through their soybean checkoff, supported the development of this USDA Certified Biobased Product, which is manufactured by Houston-based Dynamic Green Products (DGP) and sold under Stanley Black & Decker’s DEWALT® label. Airable Research Lab partnered with DGP by assisting with the raw material value chain (soybean oil, soy methyl ester and other soy additives) and providing technical support. This partnership led to support from the United Soybean Board (USB), which is assisting DGP in bringing additional soy-based products to market.

Corydon was also the first department in Kentucky to switch to SoyFoam™ TF 1122, a 100% PFAS and-fluorine-free firefighting foam made in Georgia by Cross Plains Solutions. SoyFoam™ TF 1122 is the first and only firefighting foam GreenScreen Certified® at the Gold level. Through their soy checkoff and the USB, U.S. soybean farmers have supported much of the extensive testing of SoyFoam environmental and performance benefits for use as a safer firefighting foam. “Use of the DEWALT® bar and chain oil and SoyFoam go hand in hand with our efforts to protect our crew and the communities we serve,” says King. “I have a nephew joining our fire department and that is a reminder we need care for the next generation- -using safer products gives us one less thing to worry about.”
