Soybean oil-based roof and other coatings can be applied to various surfaces.
- Green Products, LLC has a line of Environmental Liquid Membrane System® (ELMS®) roof and other coating products for natural bitumen, cement, or metal surfaces to protect these underlying materials. According to Green Products, LLC , the ELMS® 50 and ELM® 150 roof coating products:
- Are “Energy Star” approved, having received the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy national symbol for energy efficiency, and are California Title 24 compliant
- Reflect heat from the sun, reducing the amount heat absorbed and therefore reduces the amount of air conditioning required to cool buildings
- Extend roof life by providing a 100% waterproof surface within 1 hour of application
- Are ASTM International and Underwriters Laboratories tested as well as field tested for more than 10 years
- Are California VOC compliant and qualified for the California Cool Roof Program
- Can contribute to multiple credit opportunities under the LEED Green Building Rating System™ requirement to incorporate 5% rapidly renewable materials
- Can be applied by spraying, rolling, or brushing without the need for expensive equipment
- Are available in multiple product grades to accommodate the multitude of different roofing assemblies on the market
Other products in the ELMS line include: ELMS® Natural Masonry Jacket™, which according to Green Products is designed for waterproofing and restoration of numerous masonry applications such as natural stone, brick, concrete, tile, terra cotta, limestone, split face block and more; and Natural Metal Jacket™, which is a coating designed and formulated for use over various metal materials and can be applied directly to rusted metal without a primer.
- Urethane Soy Systems makes Bio-Tuff, which is a sprayed-on elastomeric coating that has been used to seal roofs against moisture. According to Urethane Soy Systems, Bio-Tuff has 15% renewable resource content and was originally developed with high abrasion, chemical and moisture resistance and strength properties.
