Insulation

Biobased Solutions

Soy-containing spray foam insulation can be applied to walls, in attic spaces, and under floors in both commercial and residential buildings. The insulation expands when applied to fill all spaces tightly. According to the product manufacturers, the foam insulation:

  • Biobased Systems makes BioBased 501w, which is a water blown, two part, open cell, biobased spray applied, polyurethane foam with a density of 0.5 lb/ft3 and an R-value of 3.8 per inch. According to the manufacturer, the product has excellent thermal insulating properties, minimizes sound transfer and can reduce the risk of moisture accumulation within the building envelope. When applied it expands and fills voids, crevices, and building cavities and reduces energy consumption by reducing infiltration, the number one source of energy loss in a structure. According to Biobased Systems, when paired with other responsible building components, the insulation can reduce monthly energy bills by up to 50% and can also reduce the size and costs of HVAC units needed for heating and cooling. According to Biobased Systems, the insulation will not breakdown over time and does not support mold growth, insects or rodents. Biobased Systems also makes BioBased 1701s, which is a water blown, two part, closed cell, spray applied, polyurethane foam with a density of 1.7 lb/ft3 and an R-value of 5.9 per inch.
  • Urethane Soy Systems makes SoyTherm™50, a two-component, open-celled, spray applied, water blown, semi-rigid polyurethane insulation foam with a density of .047-0.55 lb/ft3 and an R Value of 3.7 per inch. According to the manufacturer, it contains no ozone-depleting chemicals, VOCs, formaldehyde, or asbestos, it blocks air infiltration, reduces heating and cooling costs, and can reduce the size of required HVAC systems. According to Urethane Soy Systems, this insulation system has been rated to save up to 60% in utility bills, as well as reducing the HVAC tonnage by as much as 50%. Urethane Soy Systems also makes SoyTherm™ 100, which is is a two-component, semi-open celled, spray-applied, water blown, rigid polyurethane insulation foam with a density of 0.95-1.05 lb/ft3 and an R Value of 4.4 per inch.
