Carpet Backing

Biobased Solutions

A soy polyol is being used to make high performance polyurethane carpet backing systems, replacing a portion of the petroleum based polymers used in the backing.1 The soy polyol is also being used in backing for synthetic landscape grass and sports turf systems. According to Universal Textile Technologies, the company that works with the carpet and turf manufacturers to supply the finished product:

  • Attached cushion and non-cushion carpet made with the backing system containing the soy polyol is offered by many carpet companies and is available through the GSA Supply Schedule (SIN# 31-601).
  • It is cost competitive
  • The backing system can be used in combination with 100% post-consumer recycled secondary (i.e., fleece) and with recycled yarn systems
  • Use of soy-backed carpet contributes to the LEED Green Building Rating System™ requirement to incorporate 5% rapidly renewable materials
  • The synthetic grass and turf can be used for landscaping, playgrounds and sports fields, and other outdoor uses

1Universal Textile Technologies (UTT) has now combined the use of the soy polyol with Celceram®, a highly refined form of recovered lignite to create a new BioCelTM polyurethane backing system. According to UTT, with the addition of 100% post consumer recycled secondary backing, BioCelTM products are 55-72% green by weight.
